Force Measurements between Silanated Silica Surfaces in Aqueous CuSO4 Solutions at Various pHs

چکیده
It is well known that adsorption density of a multivalent metal ions (M) on a variety of substrates increases sharply only at pHs where the concentration of the singly-charged hydroxo complex (M(OH)(z-1)) is appreciable (1-4). In Chapter 4, a new mechanism was proposed to explain why adsorption of these hydroxo-complexes may be thermodynamically more favorable than that of the unhydrolyzed metal ions. This mechanism will be explained here briefly; for a more detailed description, the reader is referred to Chapter 4. We proposed that the free energy of adsorption (∆Gads) of a hydroxo-complex is given by the sum of coulombic (∆Gelec) and specific chemical (∆Gchem) contributions:

Adhesion between silica surfaces due to hydrogen bonding
The adhesion between surfaces can be enhanced significantly by the presence of hydrogen bonding. Confined water at the nanoscale can display behaviour remarkably different to bulk water due to the formation of hydrogen bonds between two surfaces. In this work we investigate the role of confined water on the interaction between hydrophilic surfaces, specifically the effect of organic contaminant...
متن کاملNon-DLVO silica interaction forces in NMP-water mixtures. II. An asymmetric system.
The interaction between energetically asymmetric hydrophilic and hydrophobic surfaces has fundamental and practical importance in both industrial and natural colloidal systems. The interaction forces between a hydrophilic silica sphere and a silanated, hydrophobic glass plate in N-methyl-2-pyrrolidone (NMP)-water binary mixtures were measured using atomic force microscopy (AFM). A strong and lo...
متن کاملAFM study of forces between silica, silicon nitride and polyurethane pads.
Interaction of silica and silicon nitride with polyurethane surfaces is rather poorly studied despite being of great interest for modern semiconductor industry, e.g., for chemical-mechanical planarization (CMP) processes. Here we show the results from the application of the atomic force microscopy (AFM) technique to study the forces between silica or silicon nitride (AFM tips) and polyurethane ...
متن کاملMeasurement of no-slip and slip boundary conditions in confined Newtonian fluids using atomic force microscopy.
We report measurements of slip length at smooth and rough hydrophilic silica surfaces, using the hydrodynamic force measurement atomic force microscope (AFM). There has been some debate in the literature as to whether the boundary condition between a solid and a wetting fluid is one of no-slip or partial-slip; in particular the results of Neto et al. (C. Neto, V. S. J. Craig and D. R. M. Willia...
متن کاملUse of Atomic Force Microscopy for the Study of Surface Acid-Base Properties of Carboxylic Acid-Terminated Self-Assembled Monolayers
Atomic force microscopy was used to measure the forces between a silica probe and a carboxylic acidterminated self-assembledmonolayer (SAM) onagold substrate in the presence ofKCl electrolyte solutions of different pH. Silica-silica interaction force measurements were conducted at different pH values to determine the silica probe surface electrostatic potentials under these conditions. The inte...
